Dynamic image analysis system for real-time, simultaneous particle size, shape, and morphology characterization of powders and dispersions.
This dynamic image analysis system captures and analyzes thousands of individual particle images per second to simultaneously measure particle size (equivalent sphere diameter), shape (circularity, elongation, aspect ratio, convexity), and morphology. Provides true number-based, volume-based, and surface-based size distributions without the assumptions of equivalent sphere models.
Dynamic image analysis (DIA) is the only particle sizing technique that simultaneously measures both the size and the shape of individual particles in real time. Unlike laser diffraction — which calculates an equivalent sphere diameter from the scattering pattern — DIA directly captures a high-resolution image of each particle and measures its actual projected area, perimeter, and key geometric shape descriptors.
This approach provides a uniquely complete characterization: not just how big the particles are, but how round, elongated, or irregular they are — information that is directly relevant to flowability, reactivity, dissolution rate, packing density, and process behavior.
The system operates in both wet and dry dispersion modes, enabling measurement of particles suspended in liquids (slurries, suspensions, dispersions) as well as dry powder samples fed by a vibratory disperser. With throughput rates of up to 500,000 particles per minute, statistically robust size and shape distributions are obtained in just a few minutes of measurement time.
